VOTES IN – Boris Johnson safe as UK PM for next 12 months

Boris Johnson wins no confidence motion, securing him as UK’s PM for 12 months

Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the backbench 1922 committee responsible for convening leadership votes, says that Boris Johnson has won the ballot 211 to 148.

Under the current Conservative Party leadership rules, Johnson is safe from a no-confidence motion for another twelve months.

359 votes were cast in total.

The magic number was 180, and it was awfully close to that number which was required to oust him.

The result shows that about 41 per cent of MPs don’t support him.

The vote against him, 41 per cent of his party room, was higher than that registered against former PMs when they faced off challenges, including Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

Boris Johnson claims the result is a good one for him, despite winning by a narrow margin of just 63 votes.

“I’ve got many more MPs supporting me now than I did in 2019. I’m happy with that,” he says.

“We’re going to bash on; we have a huge agenda and we’re going to get it done.

“I think it’s an extremely good, positive, conclusive, decisive result which enables us to move on, to unite and to focus on delivering – and that is exactly what we’re going to do,” he said.

“I see no point in focusing on anything else; I’m certainly not interested in snap elections.”
