Trump defends Hegseth amid impeachment speculation

Trump backs Pete Hegseth amid impeachment threats, insists on keeping him despite mounting pressure from Congress and potential replacements

Donald Trump has stated he intends to keep Pete Hegseth as war secretary despite speculation that Ron DeSantis could replace him.

Trump conveyed his support for Hegseth in an ABC News interview, expressing confusion over the speculation.

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives plans to impeach Hegseth for his involvement in the Iran war instead of confronting Trump.

Incoming House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries questioned Hegseth’s continued role.

Impeachment pressure

In September, outgoing Republican Thomas Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth and plans to push for a vote soon, as earlier reported by theaustralian.com.au.

Hegseth could face a Senate trial requiring a two-thirds majority for removal if impeached by the House.

In a video on X, Hegseth vowed to defend the Republic and criticized Democrats for pursuing impeachment.

He described the Iran War as a “courageous and historic effort,” urging Congress to pass the Pentagon’s $1.5tn 2027 budget.

Trump mentioned potential replacements and alternative roles for Hegseth, like Tennessee senator.

A senior military officer expressed frustration with Hegseth’s focus, hinting at potential repercussions.

A U.S. military source suggested Hegseth’s position is precarious.

Leon Panetta, former CIA director and Defence Secretary, indicated bipartisan concerns about Hegseth’s performance.
