“I’ve always been an outsider”: First woman of colour wins best director

NOMADLAND has cleaned up at the 93rd Academy Awards.

After initially being postponed – the film industry’s night of nights finally got underway today

But the 93rd Academy Awards looked very different

This year’s COVID-safe event was capped at just 170 people … and held across TWO locations…

At the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the permanent home of the ceremony since 2002; and for the first time at Union Station in Downtown LA.

Nomadland claimed the Oscar For Best Picture

Chloe Zhao became just the second woman to win best director, and the first woman of colour for Nomadland.

Zhao was born in Beijing and has previously spoken about feeling like an outsider in Hollywood. 

“My life has been so transient and fast-moving… I’ve always been an outsider, I’m drawn to outsiders,” she told film-maker Alfonso Cuarón in April.

While Frances McDormand won the Oscar for best actress for her role in the flick

It’s her second oscar… she also won best actress in 2018 for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Anthony Hopkins claimed the Academy Award for best actor for his work on The Father.
