Zelenskiy warns wartime election would split Ukraine

Zelenskiy warns wartime elections would ‘destroy’ Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict with Russia

KYIV, Aug 23 (Reuters) – President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed concerns that a wartime election in Ukraine would “destroy” the nation by dividing its citizens amid ongoing conflict with Russia.Zelenskiy made these remarks following former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov’s call for such an election, which has sparked controversy.

Polling concerns

Zelenskiy stated that conducting elections during wartime is prohibited by Ukrainian law due to safety issues and the displacement of many citizens.

Poll results reveal that while Ukrainian citizens are seeking political change, there’s a significant reluctance to hold elections amidst the ongoing war.

Zelenskiy highlighted the challenges in organizing elections, noting that they could act as a “tsunami for the state” that would further fragment the nation.

He reiterated his commitment to steering Ukraine towards ending the conflict while maintaining its sovereignty.

Fedorov, who was dismissed last month amid public protests, called for elections despite not clarifying his intentions regarding participation in future political contests.

Future of elections

Zelenskiy’s approval rating remains stable at approximately 60%, with most Ukrainians advocating for elections only after the end of hostilities.

The current political climate reflects widespread unease around the idea of voting during a time of crisis and uncertainty.

Zelenskiy asserts that securing the nation takes precedence over electoral processes amid ongoing Russian aggression.

Ultimately, the focus remains on preserving Ukraine’s independence rather than rushing into a potentially divisive election process.
