Finnair’s Melbourne route: Will flights to Europe get cheaper?

Finnair’s Melbourne to Helsinki flights may transform travel options for Aussies and disrupt the competitive airline landscape

Finnair has launched daily flights between Melbourne and Helsinki via Bangkok, opening a new travel option for Australians heading to Europe and intensifying competition in the international aviation market.

The service, which began on 26 October 2026, operates using Airbus A350 aircraft and connects passengers to around 90 European destinations through Helsinki.

The Bangkok stopover also gives travellers the option of booking flights on that leg alone.

Speaking to Ticker, Tom Goward from Flight Hacks examines what the new route means for passengers, including whether increased competition could lead to cheaper airfares.

The launch also raises questions about the impact on rival airlines, including Thai Airways, and how the service could reshape travel between Australia and Europe.

If approved, the route could mark a significant shift in travel options between Melbourne and Europe.
