RBA likely to raise rates next week and next month

RBA hints at fifth interest rate hike as inflation concerns grow ahead of December meeting

Financial markets anticipate a potential interest rate hike from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) at next week’s policy meeting. The RBA has communicated clearly, raising uncertainty about further tightening in December or next year.

Recent inflation data, indicating a 4.3% annual rise in consumer prices, has prompted a strong response from RBA officials.

Governor Michele Bullock labelled current inflation as “simply too high.”

RBA outlook

Trimmed mean inflation also increased to 3.6% in September, slightly above the previous month.

Markets have nearly fully factored in a hike, which would maintain the cash rate at its highest in 15 years.

RBA officials have consistently stressed the need for action against rising inflation.

Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser noted consumer frustration over prolonged high inflation, describing the outlook as “materially worse.”

This direct communication style marks a shift from the usual rehearsed responses common in central banking.

Hikes could occur in December or February depending on evolving economic conditions.

Shane Oliver from AMP considers a rate rise in December to be a significant risk, though not his base case.

He suggested the RBA might prefer to assess impacts before making further adjustments.

Ivan Colhoun, formerly with National Australia Bank, expects the RBA to “survey the damage” before December’s meeting.

October’s inflation data could rapidly alter the decision landscape.

Paul Bloxham from HSBC Australia warns that ongoing economic pressures might hinder the RBA’s capacity for further rate increases.

Increased interest rates, high fuel costs, and declining house prices could significantly impact economic performance.

The RBA’s decisions will remain crucial as financial markets adapt to the current inflationary landscape.
