Ukraine’s Zelensky in Washington as Russian strikes intensify

In a show of gratitude, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has made an historic trip to Washington, meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.

It comes as the Biden administration announces a further $1.85 billion in military aid for the war-torn nation, which includes the highly-anticipated Patriot Air Defence System.

Exact details of the Ukrainian President’s trip have been shrouded in secrecy in a bid to reduce any threats to his life.

Wearing his signature green pants and sweater, Zelensky stood next to Joe and Jill Biden on the White House lawn for a photo opportunity, before moving to the Oval Office.

Zelensky has hopes of seeking further support during his trip, thanking the American public for standing by his country in their fight against Russia.

“It’s an honour to be by your side in the united defence against what is a brutal, brutal war,” said Biden.

This is Europe’s biggest land conflict since World War Two, killing tens of thousands and forcing millions from their homes.

“The war is not over,” Zelensky said. “Thanks from our ordinary people to your ordinary people, Americans.”

The pair will shortly make their way to Capitol Hill for a joint session of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Repeated Russian missile strikes

Washington’s further military aid follows weeks of repeated Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine.

Moscow is continuing to target the nation’s energy infrastructure, leaving millions of people without electricity or running water.

The Patriot missile is one of the most advanced U.S. air defence systems in the world, offering unparalleled protection against air attacks.

“Today’s assistance for the first time includes the Patriot Air Defence System, capable of bringing down cruise missiles, short range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at a significantly higher ceiling than previously provided air defence systems,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in the statement.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, the U.S. has committed over $21 billion in military assistance to Kyiv.
