Banks are cutting jobs — What does It say about Australia’s economy?

Job cuts at NAB signal deeper banking issues amidst rising interest rates and push towards AI solutions in struggling industries

NAB’s recent announcement of job cuts could signal a looming crisis for local employment. The decision to lay off about two and a half thousand employees is part of a broader trend affecting the banking sector and beyond.

Dale Gillham from Wealth Within argues that these layoffs are part of a systemic issue. “The banking system are rapists in suits,” he said, criticising the banks for prioritising profit margins over employees.

He explained that higher interest rates and fewer loans are squeezing banks’ profits, leading to these job cuts.

Impact on business confidence

Gillham noted that NAB is not alone in this trend, with ComBank, ANZ, Telstra, and Woolworths also announcing job cuts this year.

This widespread reduction in workforce is affecting business confidence, which is currently in the bottom 5% according to NAB’s own surveys.

He highlighted the role of government policies and international factors in exacerbating the situation.

Gillham argued that governments have not done enough to improve the economic climate, instead pushing through policies that may suit vested interests but not the broader population.

As businesses struggle, many are turning to AI as a cost-saving measure. Gillham mentioned that companies are being forced to consider AI due to the high costs of hiring and compliance.

This shift could further impact employment, particularly for younger workers.

Looking ahead, Gillham suggested that the Reserve Bank of Australia might still implement at least one more rate rise, despite the current economic challenges.

He believes that unemployment needs to rise further before significant changes are made.

The growing reliance on AI and the ongoing job cuts could have lasting effects on the economy and workforce.

As businesses adapt to these changes, the future remains uncertain for many workers.
