Netflix overhauls leadership as U.S. audiences decline and the streaming giant struggles to create new hit shows

Netflix is undergoing a significant leadership change as it grapples with domestic audience engagement. The company recently replaced its content chief, Bela Bajaria, just hours after cutting 1,000 jobs she was involved in.

These leadership shifts indicate a pressing need to revamp content offerings amid declining viewership.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has expressed concerns over Americans spending less time on the platform and the lack of new hit shows.

The third-quarter earnings report set for Tuesday will address Wall Street’s inquiries regarding Netflix’s strategy.

The company has struggled to produce hits comparable to previous successes like “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game.”

Reflecting broader industry challenges, Netflix faces competition from platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

The stock price has declined over 40% in the past year, following a failed acquisition attempt of Warner Bros. Discovery.

So far, Netflix has not added new subscribers in the U.S. this year, according to analytics firm Antenna.

A Netflix spokesperson disputed Antenna’s data, asserting it misrepresents their business performance.

The restructuring plan, dubbed “Project Meridian,” originally proposed cutting 10% of roles but concluded at around 6%.

Sarandos and co-CEO Greg Peters promptly informed affected employees of the layoffs.

Peter Rice, a former executive at Disney, is set to replace Bajaria and will manage a $20 billion content budget.

Despite its challenges, Netflix remains a powerful player in subscription streaming, with a low cancellation rate of 2.1% in September.

Financial reports indicate a positive outlook, with expected revenue growth of 13% to 14% and operating margins around 31.5%.

New content categories, particularly live sports, show potential, while gaming engagement has lagged significantly.

Video podcasts have allowed Netflix to expand programming efficiently, but Sarandos emphasised the gradual development required for these formats.

Recent discussions have focused on the effectiveness of Netflix’s recommendation algorithm and viewer engagement strategies.

There are considerations to change the release format of certain series to boost viewership.

The platform is exploring options to allow subscriptions to other services and has initiated partnerships for additional programming.

Netflix is transitioning to major theatrical releases for select films, moving away from its traditional direct-to-streaming model.

Despite its challenges, upcoming film releases like “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” show promise with extensive promotional strategies.
