China defends arrest of Catholic Cardinal in Hong Kong

Published

One of the most senior Catholic clerics in Asia has been arrested under Hong Kong’s National Security Law

Joseph Zen is a 90-year-old Catholic Cardinal who is an advocate for democracy across Hong Kong.

Authorities say the retired cardinal was arrested for colluding with foreign forces.

He was arrested with a pop singer, barrister and a scholar in cultural studies.

Zen was allegedly involved in a defence fund for protesters who were arrested during nationwide protests.

“The persons concerned are suspected of conspiracy to collude with foreign countries or foreign forces to endanger national security-–an act of severe nature.”

It comes as China seeks to turn the once-outspoken city into something like its authoritarian mainland.

The Hong Kong diocese says it is “extremely concerned” about Zen’s safety.

Zen and his colleagues join more than 180 Hong Kongers arrested under the strict laws.

The defence fund was disbanded last year after police made requests for donor information.

Hong Kong recently elected a pro-Beijing leader, John Lee, which has also raised concerns among G7 nations.
