Solomon Islands sign security deal with China

Published

on

The Solomon Islands have signed a security deal with China, which will see the two nations work closer together on national security

The Prime Minister of the island-nation says he will not allow China to build a military base.

The deal reportedly however allows Beijing to send troops to the Solomon Islands to protect Chinese-built infrastructure.

The United States has warned the pact could lead to a Chinese military presence in the nation of 680,000.

Meanwhile, Australia’s opposition says the deal is the worst policy failure in the Pacific since World War Two.

Late last year, the island nation imposed a curfew as civil unrest broke out.

It follows Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare surviving a vote of no confidence, as he backed policy with Beijing over Taiwan.

Professor Damien Kingsbury told Ticker News this deal has major ramifications and the Australian government is to blame.
