Rising floodwaters are threatening homes for the third time this year

On Australia’s east coast on Thursday, Sydney has experienced nearly a month’s rain overnight, authorities warn that more rain is expected throughout the day.

The Nepean River is expected to exceed levels seen during the devastating floods of 1988, with rain continuing to pour down.

It follows more than 100mm of rain falling across Sydney in just 24 hours, millions facing an uncertain few days.

New South Wales emergency services Acting Commissioner Daniel Austin said exceptionally sharp, short bursts of rain have been creating flash flooding almost every hour.

“This is a highly dynamic situation. These events are moving exceptionally quickly,” he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has posted the issued Flood warnings for many areas throughout the state of New South Wales.

Emergency services are continuing to respond to calls for help, with over 20 rescues already, as warnings are issued urging residents to “never drive through floodwaters”.

The NSW State emergency service has listed numerous evacuation centre locations for those affected if it’s not possible for them to seek assistance from friends and family.

Climate change is widely believed to be a contributing factor to this severe weather.
