UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is warning Russia that an invasion of Ukraine will be “disastrous” and “painful” as tensions remain high

The PM’s comments come as Britain pulls some of its embassy staff from Ukraine over safety concerns.

While Johnson says the situation is “pretty gloomy” he also notes war is not inevitable.

The United Kingdom is currently in the process of creating a package of economic sanctions which can be used against Russia if required, and is supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Johnson says the West needs to make it very clear to Russia that a war in Ukraine would be a catastrophe.

NATO troops are also on standby, with additional ships and fighter jets sent to eastern Europe to reinforce defences and increase deterrence.

Russia is continuing to build up forces on its border, with an estimated 100,000 troops already positioned.

As NATO troops take their positions, the Kremlin is accusing the West of escalating tensions with this move.

US President Joe Biden, Boris Johnson and other EU leaders are also set to meet virtually in the coming hours.
