Support for Japan’s PM Suga slides as COVID cases rise in Tokyo Games

As Olympics events such as the swimming get underway, support for Japan’s Prime Minister is taking a dive

Voter support for Mr. Suga slid nine points to 34 percent, its lowest since he took office last September.

Continuing the bad news nearly two-thirds of respondents say the country’s roll-out of coronavirus vaccinations is not going well.

The rollout has been hampered by a slow start and supplies snarls, resulting in less than a quarter so far receiving a full vaccination.

Suga’s ambition had been to contain the virus outbreak, preside over a successful Games and call a general election

That was thrown into doubt after a surge in COVID-19 infections which led to the fourth state of emergency in Tokyo and forced Olympic organisers to ban spectators from almost all venues.

Tokyo reported 1,429 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, almost double the number on the same day a week earlier.
