Victoria’s financial strain: high taxes, mounting debt

Victoria’s soaring taxes and debt drive concerns over financial management, warns Dr Steven Enticott amidst political and infrastructure challenges

Victoria has the highest tax burden in Australia, with debt projected to reach nearly $200 billion this decade. This financial strain is due to overspending on unproductive assets, corruption, and an increase in the number of well-paid government workers.

Annual interest on the state’s debt ranges from $10 billion to $15 billion.

Despite a new Labor government led by Ben Carroll, the tax situation remains unchanged.

Victoria’s government has also sought a financial bailout from the federal government but has not succeeded.

The rising influence of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party suggests a possible shift in the political landscape, alongside the Liberal party.

Criticism exists regarding past infrastructure spending, which lacked proper revenue models and diminished productivity.

Concerns about future projects, such as the Suburban Rail Loop, have been raised due to funding issues.

Dr Steven Enticott advises a focus on enhancing business productivity and reviving industries like manufacturing and mining to increase state income.

He states that borrowing should only occur if it supports strong business cases that enhance the state’s GDP.
