U.S. and Russia to host diplomatic talks amid Ukraine border tensions

As the situation on the Ukraine border remains volatile, Washington says it’s unlikely there will be any breakthroughs at crisis talks this week

Leaders will convene in Geneva first, before moving to Brussels and then onto Vienna…

But the Kremlin says it will not make concessions under US pressure and warns that the talks could end early.

Washington is hoping the talks will prevent a new Russian invasion of Ukraine… as relations between the US and Russia reach their worst level since the end of the Cold War.

Speaking to CNN, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken confirmed that the prospect of success is unlikely.

Russia has demanded that America provides security guarantees, and the United States and its allies say they are prepared to discuss the possibility of restricting military exercises… as well as missile deployments in the region. 

Tens of thousands of Russian troops remain gathered on the border of Ukraine in preparation for what Washington says could be an invasion.

As the talks commence, Blinken says both sides will put proposals forward, and see if there are grounds for moving forward.
