KYIV, July 19 (Reuters) – Russia launched a major ballistic missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, resulting in one death and 16 injuries, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.The air force reported 41 missiles were fired, causing significant damage across various districts, disrupting daily life and sparking fires.

Residential buildings, warehouses, and a supermarket suffered extensive damage, as stated by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who noted three individuals were in serious condition.

Four people died and 19 were injured in a separate strike on a postal depot near Kharkiv, according to the regional governor.

Emergency crews worked at a site in western Kyiv, sifting through the wreckage and extinguishing fires in bombed residential blocks.

A resident named Vlad recounted the terrifying moment when a blast shattered his apartment door, injuring him.

Metro stations in central Kyiv bore the brunt of the attacks, with significant destruction reported.

Rescuers also responded to strikes in Zaporizhzhia, where at least two were killed and 14 injured in residential areas.

CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF AIR DEFENCES

Russian missile strikes have intensified in recent weeks, worsened by Ukraine’s critical shortage of U.S.-designed air defences.

The military claimed it intercepted 18 missiles and 108 out of 125 drones during the attack.

Zelenskiy announced a political agreement with the U.S. allowing Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles, aiming for production by year-end.

Continuous Russian aggression in the ongoing conflict is compelling Ukrainian allies to expedite the supply of air defence systems.

Zelenskiy emphasized the urgent need for interceptors in his address on X.
