Entrepreneur Nick Russian addresses small business challenges and his innovative approach in hospitality amid economic pressures
Entrepreneur and investor Nick Russian has warned that rising operating costs, government policies and declining consumer spending are putting increasing pressure on small businesses.
Speaking on Whisky and Suits, hosted by Chris Christofi and Imran Khan, Russian reflected on more than two decades in hospitality, entertainment, education and recruitment.
Starting out in a pub as a teenager, Russian learned the importance of networking before moving from event promotion into venue ownership.
His approach has since focused on a hybrid hospitality model combining dining, drinks and entertainment, with adaptability and direct involvement remaining central to his business strategy.

Russian said rising expenses and surcharge policies are making it harder for operators to maintain profitability, particularly as higher living costs leave consumers with less disposable income.
He also questioned whether policymakers understand the challenges facing small businesses, arguing that increasing the tax free threshold could provide workers with financial relief without adding to employer costs in the same way as mandatory pay rises.
Russian warned that continued economic pressure could threaten local businesses and commercial precincts, potentially encouraging people to seek opportunities elsewhere.
