A man has been shot and killed by French police after he threatened authorities with a knife

The attack occurred at 7:00am on Monday morning at Gare du Nord station in Paris, with the man approaching two police officers who were on patrol.

Authorities say the individual was carrying a 30cm weapon, which was inscribed with an “anti-police” message.

The French Transport Minister, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, says the man was known to the police as someone who wandered around the station.

“[He] died on the spot,”

Djebbari says.

An eyewitness says they heard screams and saw a tall man with a large knife in his hand threatening armed policemen.

“The police made us go up on the platform, made us lie on the ground,”

they say.

No police officers or members of the public were injured.

A security perimeter has now been set up and several trains were delayed as a result, including the international Eurostar trains.

Authorities believe the incident is not terrorism-related.

Savannah Pocock contributed to this report.
