NATO says it isn’t planning to deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe

The Western military alliance has rejected Russian accusations and a call by Moscow for a moratorium on such weapons in Europe.

NATO’s Secretary-General says Russia has violated the I-N-F treaty by deploying new range nuclear capable missiles in Europe, adding that NATO did not aim to mirror Moscow’s behaviour.

The 1987 INF treaty between then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachov and former US President Ronald Reagan banned intermediate-range nuclear weapons.

These are weapons with a range of up to 5,000 kilometres.
