German ministers pledge swift action against Frankfurt riots and looting, with over 100 police injured and arrests made
Overnight, rioters damaged 17 businesses and injured more than 100 police officers, according to Roman Poseck, the interior minister of Hesse.
Police managed to apprehend 54 individuals aged between 13 and 29 amid intense clashes.
Government response
Poseck expressed his shock at the violence, stating that the current situation was unacceptable.
He noted that most of those arrested were German nationals and highlighted that many rioters were of immigrant background.
Police estimate that 1,000 to 1,500 violent individuals participated in the disturbances.
In addition to property damage, rioters reportedly used petrol bombs and other objects against police officers.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that those responsible for the riots will face consequences.
He expressed disappointment over the involvement of troublemakers from the immigrant community, although evidence for this claim was not provided.
Dobrindt also mentioned that a strong police presence had been successful in managing the protests.
In response to fears of extremist groups taking advantage of the unrest, border controls have been tightened.
Protests in France have remained largely peaceful following violent riots earlier in October.
Authorities are working to ensure that safety measures remain effective in both Germany and France.
