Djokovic to play in Wimbledon despite being unvaccinated

It’s a decision that has split many tennis fans but Novak Djokovic will play at this year’s Wimbledon event despite not being vaccinated against Covid-19

The world number one travelled to Melbourne, Australia, earlier this year after believing he would be able to play, only to get knocked back on the eve of the Australian Open.

The 34-year old then missed tournaments in the U.S. due to Covid rules, but the All England Lawn Tennis Club has given him the tick of approval.

Chief Executive Sally Bolton says “we are planning to return to a normal Championships this year and so we don’t intend to implement any of the Covid-19 measures that we saw last year in any substantial fashion”.

But the ban against all Russian players will stand and that means World Number 2 Daniil Medvedev won’t play.

The ban relates to the War in Ukraine and what Wimbledon organisers said should not be “used to benefit the propaganda machine of the Russian regime”.

Djokovic labelled the ban as “crazy” and the ATP also criticised the decision.
