Court rules in Ed Sheeran copyright lawsuit

British pop star Ed Sherran is now off the hook in a closely watched copyright lawsuit. A Manhattan jury decided on Thursday that the 32-year-old did not copy Marvin Gaye’s classic 1973 song ‘Let’s Get it On’ with his own 2014 hit, ‘Thinking out Loud.’

The family of Marvin Gaye’s co-writer Ed Townsend claims that the songs have striking similarities.

After the verdict was announced, the multi–Grammy Award winning music artist, said nobody owns those cords just like no one owns the colour blue.

“It’s devastating to be accused of stealing someone else’s song,” Sheeran said outside the courtroom.

“We need songwriters and the writing community to come together to bring back common sense” and use “trusted individuals” as music experts so the “creative process can carry on,” he added.

After the trail Sheeran thanked the jury for rejecting what he called a threat to all musicians.
