China called out by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over alleged election interference

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has launched an investigation into alleged interference by China in his nation’s recent elections.

An appointed official will review classified reports about the 2019 and 2021 federal elections and make recommendations for future contests.

China is denying any interference, calling the claims both “baseless and defamatory”.

The launch follows rival political party leaders calling for a public investigation.

Speaking to reporters on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Trudeau says the reports which challenge Canada’s “sovereignty” are shocking.

The investigator has not yet been chosen, with the appointment set to be made in the coming days.

Trudeau will also ask members of parliament and senators in the National Security and Intelligence Committee to begin a new probe of election security.

The PM says Canada has long been aware of meddling attempts by China, alongside Iran and Russia.
