Brian Henderson dies aged 89

Legendary Channel 9 broadcaster Brian Henderson has died following a battle with cancer

Henderson hosted the Sydney weeknight news for Nine from 1957 until his retirement in 2002, claiming the title of Australia’s longest-serving news presenter. 

He was also the host of popular music program Bandstand from 1958 until 1972.

Australia’s Prime Minister said “there would be no more trusted voice or face in the history of Australian news broadcasting than Brian Henderson”

Today host Karl Stefanovic described  Henderson as “an absolute legend”.

“A gentleman and a total professional who provided guidance and inspiration for so many colleagues and generations who followed,” he said.

Henderson won two Gold Logies during his career, and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2009 for his contributions to TV news.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, who were by his bedside as he died.
