MotoGP title contender Jorge Martin will not participate in the Australian Grand Prix after sustaining a forearm fracture in a crash during the sprint race.Aprilia confirmed that Martin suffered a radius fracture in a statement released shortly after the incident, and initial scans suggest a suspected ulna fracture near the wrist.

Further tests are needed to fully assess the injury, but Martin has been deemed unfit for the race, impacting his title aspirations significantly.

“Jorge Martin was taken to the circuit’s medical center following his crash,” the statement detailed.

The x-rays confirmed the radius fracture and suspected ulna damage, leading to his unavailability for the grand prix.

Title hopes dashed

Martin crashed while in a close contest with Ducati’s Marc Marquez for victory at Phillip Island, losing control on lap 8.

The crash occurred at high speed, approximately 180km/h, and resulted in Martin being transported to the medical facility for evaluation.

Marquez ultimately won the race, causing a shift in the championship standings where Martin fell from a two-point lead to ten points behind.

Initially, Martin launched successfully from fourth place and overtook Marquez for the lead on lap 3.

However, he encountered difficulties two laps later, leading to his eventual crash six laps from the finish.

The incident not only affected Martin’s chances in the race but also his overall pursuit of the championship title.

Team-mate Marco Bezzecchi will now take on a more prominent role as Martin recovers from his injuries.
