Superstar Lionel Messi opened the scoring before the South Americans’ lead was doubled before half-time.

A brace of second half-goals by the French sent the match into extra-time, both teams scored to send the game into a shoot-out.

Argentina held their nerve to convert all their chances from the 11-yard spot, giving the blue and whites their third star and Messi his first World Cup triumph.

The reactions in Buenos Aires and Paris could not have been any different.
