Antony Blinken testifies in wake of Xi Jinping-Vladimir Putin summit

When President Biden took office, he promised that America was back. But, is that really the case?

The United States’ top diplomat testified on Capitol Hill about his agency’s foreign policy priorities before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered a stark and candid view on the global situation.

His testimony comes following Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping publicised their goal for a New World order during their three-day summit in Moscow.

The unholy alliance frightens the United States.

Republicans say President Joe Biden failed to take a stronger stance with China and Russia—especially after a Russian fighter jet downed a U.S. Reaper drone and the Chinese spy balloon incursion over the continental United States.

The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Marco Rubio, says the fight in Ukraine is more than a proxy war – there are concerns about China’s designs for Taiwan.

China and Russia share similar goals and stand in opposition against western influences.

As their alliance grows deeper, President Xi has invited President Putin to visit China in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, officials at the White House say they’re still working to schedule a phone call between President Biden and President Xi.

Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, following complications from double pneumonia. The Vatican confirmed his death on Monday morning, with Cardinal Kevin Farrell announcing that “the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father” at 7:35am.

The first Latin American and Jesuit Pope, Francis led the Roman Catholic Church for over a decade, earning global praise for his humility, progressive stance, and focus on inclusion and compassion.

Just days before his passing, the Pope surprised crowds at Easter Sunday Mass, blessing worshippers in St Peter’s Square. Despite recent hospitalisation with bronchitis, he appeared in good spirits, even pausing to bless children from the Popemobile.

His death has triggered nine days of mourning in Italy. Leaders around the world have paid tribute. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called him a man “whose compassion embraced all humanity,” while Opposition Leader Peter Dutton described his devotion as unwavering.

Francis will be remembered not only as a man of many firsts — the first Jesuit Pope, the first from the Global South — but also as a tireless advocate for the poor, refugees, and marginalised communities.
