What the world can learn from U.K’s ‘freedom day’

Published

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled the next steps the nation will take out of a Covid-19 lockdown

Dubbed “Freedom Day”, July 19th will see a departure from legal restrictions and a focus on personal responsibility.

Laws surrounding face coverings, social distancing and work from home orders will be relaxed.

However, some experts are warning that the current surge in the Delta variant across the country will result in a dramatic rise in case numbers and deaths if restrictions are lifted too early.

However, Johnson says if the country can’t open in the next few weeks when will it open?

Johnson warns there may be up to 50,000 new infections per day by the 19th of July reopening date and says residents “must reconcile… with more deaths from Covid”.

The easing of restrictions comes as around 86 percent of the U-K’s population has received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, with 63 percent receiving both jabs.

Yesterday, the UK recorded over 24,000 new cases and 15 Covid-19 related deaths.
