Thailand decriminalises cannabis trade, removing it from narcotics list

Who knew Thailand would be the next Netherlands?

The South East Asian country has joined other progressive nations in removing marijuana from its banned narcotics list.

People in Thailand are now able to grow cannabis at home as well as sell it.

The region is well-known for its strict drug laws making Thailand the first to make such a progressive move in South-East Asia.

But people still won’t be able to use the drug recreationally although experts are adamant that this ruling decriminalises marijuana.

Each household will be allowed to grow up to six cannabis pot plants once they register with authorities with companies also authorised to farm the plant once acquiring a permit.

Select restaurants will also offer dishes and drinks infused with cannabis.

The move is an attempt to boost agriculture and tourism by allowing local cannabis trade.

Thailand’s government is even offering one million cannabis seedlings as a promotion for the ruling.

The country’s deputy prime minister says this is “an opportunity for people and the state to earn income from marijuana and hemp”.
