Firmus begins R&D factory to ease power issues

Firmus starts construction on Tasmanian R&D facility to ease power grid strains despite criticism over diesel generator reliance

The Oliver Curtis-led Firmus Technologies has announced plans for a research and development facility in Tasmania following the cancellation of its $44 billion sharemarket float.Construction will commence on a site at the former Wesley Vale Pulp Mill after gaining approval from Latrobe Council.

The facility will focus on AI computing and reducing dependency on traditional backup power sources like diesel generators.

Firmus faces criticism for its energy requirements, with plans for 276 diesel generators at its Bell Bay AI factory, which will consume significant power.

Facility details

The three planned Tasmanian facilities, including Bell Bay, will require a total of 418 megawatts of power, roughly a third of Tasmania’s winter average energy consumption.

Hydro Tasmania is evaluating Firmus’ request for 444 megawatts of power with a decision expected by late 2026.

The R&D facility aims to enhance locally developed software patented by Firmus in 2025.

Research will investigate the flexibility of AI computing workloads in relation to electricity grid conditions and explore alternative backup power sources like batteries.

The R&D factory operates independently from Firmus’ ongoing AI project at the same location, which is undergoing a separate planning process.
