U.S. stock market faces $2 trillion loss as tech shares plunge amid AI spending concerns and disappointing earnings
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, saw a loss of over $500 billion in market value on Thursday alone.
The catalyst for this decline was underwhelming corporate earnings reports, where several major tech companies highlighted their AI-related expenditures and forecasts of slowing growth.
AI bubble risk
Investors were already wary due to high stock valuations, a situation worsened by rising inflation and potential interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve in December.
Alphabet reported a $9.1 billion negative free cash flow, primarily due to skyrocketing AI infrastructure costs, leading to a near 13% drop in its share price for the week.
Amazon, while seeing a 39% increase in AWS cloud revenue, disclosed a negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion and anticipates capital expenditures of $220 billion this year.
Intel’s stock decline was exacerbated by a production disruption at its Israeli factory, with an estimated revenue hit of $600 million over two quarters.

Reddit warned that AI-generated search answers were negatively affecting user traffic, leading to a 36% drop in value over the week.
Enterprise software companies also faced declines, with ServiceNow down about 34% and Fortinet down approximately 24%.
Concerns are rising that heavy AI investments may not yield sufficient returns to justify current expenses, especially as companies increase debt for financing.
Despite these warning signs, some tech firms, such as Microsoft, reported strong cloud demand, indicating growth potential remains.
Upcoming earnings from AMD and Nvidia will be critical in assessing the strength of AI infrastructure and its capacity to sustain market valuations.
Investor focus will be on whether AI spending forecasts decline, corporate earnings continue to miss expectations, and if pressure spreads beyond the tech sector.
