Union calls for careful AI implementation in government

Union urges cautious AI rollout amid budget concerns and calls for local data protection in federal inquiry

An inquiry into artificial intelligence is preparing for its 11th hearing, focusing on the cautious implementation of AI in government sectors. The public service union is advocating for a measured rollout, citing concerns over budget savings being misinterpreted as a result of AI augmentation.

Rebecca Fawcett, the new leader of the Community and Public Service Union, will present at the hearing on Friday.

The uncertainty surrounding the costs of AI implementation has prompted the union to call for caution, as any unregulated rollout could lead to increased government expenses without a clear return on investment.

AI concerns

The union’s submission references UK analyses that projected significant savings from automation, highlighting doubts about existing AI models’ capabilities.

Fawcett asserted that efficiency shouldn’t compromise lawful decision-making or reliable public services.

She proposed the establishment of a sovereign AI capability to ensure Australians’ data remains secure within the country.

Warnings have emerged from the Australian Signals Directorate about an expected rise in AI-driven cyber attacks, necessitating enhancements to baseline technology across both public and private sectors.

Anticipated improvements may further strain public service budgets in the next decade.

Discussions around fair compensation for Australian content creators whose data is used for training AI models remain unresolved by the government.

The union has suggested a system of “data trusts” that would allow individuals to collectively manage their data rights and benefits, akin to principles utilized in the superannuation system.
