Explosions occurred in Riyadh on Sunday as King Khalid International Airport prepared to resume flights following a two-week shutdown. The Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting a ballistic missile along with two drones targeting the capital, as well as a cruise missile aimed at Khamis Mushait and 10 ballistic missiles aimed at the southern region.

Despite the airport’s plans to resume flights, it is unclear how operational it will be following Houthi attacks.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree declared the airport unsafe for airlines and travellers.

Flight safety concerns

Saree warned all airlines against using King Khalid Airport, stating it remains a military target.

He added that the Saudi regime would face the consequences of any operations at the airport.

A recent Houthi attack resulted in 13 fatalities and over 300 injuries, marking the deadliest incident in the country in a decade.

The airport announced that Terminal 1 will accommodate domestic flights while Terminal 2 will serve international flights from national carriers starting on October 25.

Passengers have been advised to confirm their flight status with airlines before travelling.

An Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist reported hearing three explosions in Riyadh, with residents receiving alerts about a “hostile aerial threat”.

The coalition confirmed that air defences intercepted a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh by the Houthi militia.

Brig. Gen. Turki al-Maliki later announced the destruction of a cruise missile targeting Khamis Mushait and 10 ballistic missiles aimed at the southern region.
