Local prefect Maurice Barate described the incident as a deliberate act, calling it a “catastrophe for heritage.”

Approximately two-thirds of the building’s exterior has been destroyed, with the roof collapsing onto lower floors.

Protests in France have entered their fourth week, with thousands participating in demonstrations against the government.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and stated that it has no place in the republic.

Protest actions included various groups such as former “Yellow Vests,” students, and climate activists.

Around 400 people were arrested during the protests, as widespread unrest continued across multiple cities.

Masked groups attempted to breach municipal buildings and engaged in violent confrontations with police.

Riot impact

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez attributed the violence to radical far-left groups responsible for the chaos.

Despite many peaceful protests, some events escalated into riots, with police deploying tear gas and water cannons.

Authorities estimate that as many as 200,000 participants took part in the protests nationwide on October 17, 2026.

The social unrest has raised concerns as the country approaches a presidential election in six months.
