Wizz Air to suspend flights to Moldova capital

European low-cost carrier Wizz Air will suspend all flights to the capital of Moldova from March 14

In a statement, the company says a high, but not imminent, risk in Moldova’s airspace means Wizz Air must pause all flights to the capital, Chisinau.

Tensions have been mounting between Moldova and Russia, with Moldova’s President accusing the Kremlin of using “saboteurs” to stoke unrest amid a period of political instability.

Moldova’s Foreign Minister says his country is prepared for a “full spectrum of threats”, amid fears Russia could intensify attempts to destabilise the nation.

Tensions between Russia and Moldova have soured in recent months, with Russian missiles aimed at Ukraine entering Moldovan airspace on a number of occasions.

Authorities are blaming the Kremlin for fuelling anti-government protests, which Moscow denies.

Wizz Air says it will add extra flights from Romania to compensate for the loss, including a new service to Berlin, and more flights to Barcelona, London and many of Italy’s major cities.
