Violent clashes in Pakistan after former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested

Violent clashes have broken out in Pakistan between security forces and supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan after he was arrested.

At least one person has been killed amid the chaos, with the United States and UK calling for adherence to the “rule of law”.

Khan was arrested by security forces at the High Court in the capital, Islamabad.

Dozens of officers were sent to detain the 70-year-old, who was taken to a vehicle and driven away.

He is appearing in court on charges of corruption, charges he says are politically motivated.

The interior minister ordered mobile data services in the country to be suspended on Friday as protests grew, with many of them taking place in front of army compounds.

Pakistan’s army plays a prominent role in politics, sometimes seizing power in military coups.

Many believe Khan’s 2018 election win happened with the help of the military.

Now in opposition, he is one of its most vocal critics, as the army’s popularity falls.
