Russian court extends WNBA player Brittney Griner’s detention

A Russian court has extended the pre-trial detention for WNBA Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner

Griner has been detained in Russia for over 100 days and now according to Russian state TV will remain there until at least July 2.

In February, she was arrested at an airport near Moscow and accused of having cannabis vaping oil in her luggage, which is illegal to possess in Russia.

Officials have charged the 31-year-old with “large-scale transportation of drugs” which could see her in prison for up to ten years.

The U.S. Government says Griner has been ‘wrongfully detained’ in Russia and is working to make her release a priority.

“Brittney Griner should not be detained. She should not be detained for a single day longer.”
