The commission, established via papal rescript on May 12, encompasses seven Vatican institutions.

These include the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Communication.

Cardinal Michael Czerny will lead the group for the first year, with leadership rotating annually among its members.

The pope’s decision addresses the rapid advancements in AI and the implications for human dignity and collective humanity.

Cardinal Czerny described the commission as a hopeful move for the Church to confront AI challenges.

The commission’s launch coincides with the anticipated encyclical titled “Magna Humanitas,” expected to advocate for ethical AI prioritising human dignity.

Pope Leo XIV aims to draw parallels with his namesake Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical “Rerum Novarum,” which explored workers’ rights during the industrial revolution.

With a background in mathematics, Leo XIV has been vocal about the responsible use of AI.

He encourages young people to think critically even without AI tools and cautions against using chatbots for religious purposes.

In February, he warned about the impact of AI on human relationships.

The Vatican will host a conference on May 21 to further examine AI’s effects on communication and society.
