Passengers taken to hospital after severe turbulence

Eleven people have suffered serious injuries on a flight from Phoenix

A Hawaiian Airlines jet was around 30 minutes from Honolulu when turbulence knocked it around.

Passengers on board reported serious head injuries, cuts and bruises. Around 20 passengers were taken to a nearby emergency room for treatment.

Nine passengers are reported to be in a stable condition.

Emergency services were waiting at the airport as the jet touched down around 11am local time.

Hawaiian Airlines said it is supporting all affected passengers and employees.

“Medical care was provided to several guests & crew members at the airport for minor injuries while some were swiftly transported to local hospitals for further care,” the airline said.

Flight 35 reported turbulence as it neared Hawaii. The Airbus A330 was carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating the incident.
