North Korea fires another ballistic missile, heightening tensions

North Korea has fired yet another intercontinental ballistic missile.

Reports suggest the launch was directed towards the east of the country and has fallen into the ocean inside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

It comes a day after Pyongyang fired a short-range ballistic missile into waters off the east coast.

Tensions between North Korea, the U.S. and western allies are at an all time high.

The U.S. Air Base located in northern Japan told all personnel to seek immediate shelter.

Japan’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has condemned the missile launch.

“We naturally lodged a strong protest against North Korea, which has repeated its provocations with unprecedented frequency,” Kishida said.

“We have told (Pyongyang) that we absolutely cannot tolerate such actions.”

It’s the second suspected test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile this month alone.

South Korea and Japan are now concerned of a potential nuclear test.

According to a tally from CNN, the nation has carried out tests on 34 seperate days this year.

Why OPEC policy decisions will have a major impact on oil prices

Published

on

Despite the fall in oil prices, OPEC and its allies policy decisions can have a major impact on oil prices.

In May 2023, the total number of rigs drilling for oil and gas was already down by around 7% when compared with its peak in December 2022.

Slower drilling activity eventually translates into slower production growth, creating a delay of up to 6 months.

In the meantime, high levels of production are keeping inventories elevated, especially in the case of gas, which is keeping prices under pressure.

OPEC and its allies are weighing the possibility of further oil supply cuts, despite the fall in oil prices.

OPEC+ and its allies led by Russia, pumps around 40% of the world’s crude.

So, its policy decisions can have a major impact on oil prices.

Bloomberg’s Senior Oil and Gas Analyst Fernando Valle joins us to discuss.
