Meet the world’s oldest flight attendant

Published

If you have flown American Airlines there’s a high chance you or someone you know has been served by Bette Nash

Bette Nash has been working in the skies for 65 years.

The 86-year-old is the world’s longest-serving flight attendant. She has also received a Guinness World Record for her efforts.

Nash has the freedom to choose any route she wants. But for most of her career, she has been loyal to the New York-Washington-Boston route.

She says it allows her to be home every night with her disabled son who she continues to care for.

“As long as I have my health and I’m able, why not work. It’s still fun. Plus, I’ve at least made my Diamond Jubilee, just like Queen Elizabeth,” she says.

When she first started flying, Nash says the airline would check on her at home to ensure she was not living with a man because flight attendants had to be single.

The airline also weighed her before shifts and could suspend her if she gained too much weight.

The veteran says bringing “human factor into it is the most important. Instead of technology, it’s humanology”.
