A major winter storm in the U.S. is battering the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest

So far one individual has lost their life.

A volunteer firefighter was killed after coming in contact with a power line.

Thousands of flights have been either delayed or cancelled, with more than 900,000 residents without power.

A significant chuck of the country’s north, from Washington state to New England, remains under winter weather advisories.

Authorities are warning those travelling in cars to be alert and mindful of thick ice on roads.

Footage posted online shows vehicles stuck on roadways, while streets and walkways are in drifting snow.
