Kyiv missile attack kills civilians; strikes ongoing

Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, faced a ballistic missile attack from Russian forces on Sunday morning. Four civilians were killed in strikes across other regions of Ukraine throughout the day.Russia reported that four individuals died due to a Ukrainian drone strike in the occupied Ukrainian city of Horlivka. Ukraine’s air force confirmed that Russia launched seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones against Ukraine overnight.

Civilians affected

In Chernihiv, a Russian drone struck a supermarket, killing two people, including a child. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attacks as deliberate terror lacking military justification.

In Kharkiv, one civilian died and twelve others needed medical care following a drone attack. Meanwhile, a glide bomb strike in Zaporizhzhia resulted in one death and six injuries.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a fire in a multi-storey building caused by the missile attack, injuring three people. Images showed extensive damage with vehicles ablaze.

Zelenskiy had recently warned of increased Russian attacks over the following 48 hours. In Horlivka, Russian-installed officials reported four civilian casualties from a Ukrainian drone strike, with no further details provided.

Attack denials

Both Russia and Ukraine claim they do not target civilians, despite thousands of civilian deaths since the onset of the war in February 2022. Most civilian casualties have been attributed to Russian strikes on Ukraine.
