Protests have engulfed the nation, but the Prime Minister will try to convince people over the next few months

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced he will delay his plan to overhaul the justice system until the summer.

The nation has been engulfed in protests after he fired his defence minister, who had spoken out against the plans.

Israel also saw services come to a halt after the country’s biggest trade union called for a strike over the issue.

The government is seeking to take decisive control over the committee which appoints judges, but the PM says he will consult more before bringing into law.

The reforms would give the parliament authority to override Supreme Court decisions with a basic majority, and would make it difficult to declare a prime minister unfit for office and remove them from power.

Netanyahu says the changes would stop courts over-reaching their powers, but critics say they would help him, as he faces an ongoing trial for corruption.
