Three Indian Air Force officers have been made redundant for accidentally firing a missile into Pakistan

The Indian Government says there were no casualties after its air force misfired a missile into Pakistan earlier this year.

Three personnel were fired for the incident in which a ‘technical malfunction’ caused the weapon to cross the border.

“A court of inquiry, set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the standard operating procedures by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile.”

Authorities in Pakistan believe the missile was unarmed and crashed nearly 500 kilometres from the nation’s capital, Islamabad.

After the incident, India’s Defence Minister said the missile system was safe and reliable.

“Moreover, our safety procedures and protocols are of the highest order and are reviewed from time to time,” Rajnath Singh said.

The weapon was reportedly a Brahmos missile, which is known for being the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world.
