Germany ready to support embargo on Russian oil

Published

Germany may soon move away from Russian energy, backing the European Union if it is to impose an embargo on Russian oil

The ban could be imposed within days.

Germany is Russia’s biggest energy customer, with energy exports being the country’s biggest source of income.

With European countries dependent on Moscow for energy, hundreds of millions of euros are being sent to Russia every day.

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been wary of condemning Russia but is being pressured by other politicians to show more support for Ukraine.

Economy Minister of the Greens says “Germany is not against an oil ban on Russia. Of course it is a heavy load to bear but we would be ready to do that”.

Meanwhile, Scholz confirmed that the sanctions imposed on Russia will remain until Moscow reaches a peace agreement with Ukraine.

The Chancellor says Putin’s moves were miscalculated and “He didn’t think his entire Ukraine operation through”.

He also emphasised that Germany will not accept Russia’s annexation of Crimea, labelling it as a “breach of international law”.

In an interview on ZDF public television Scholz added that he will not be visiting Kyiv.

In this special interview, the Urth.io CEO discusses the critical role of soil carbon in tackling climate change and her mission to reshape the future of sustainable business.

Samantha Jewell, founder and CEO of Urth.io, is on a mission to change the way businesses think about Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the area of soil carbon stewardship.

In a recent on Ticker News, Jewell underscored the importance of reducing carbon emissions and the critical role businesses can play in addressing climate change.

One key focus of Urth.io is supporting farmers in creating carbon offsets through responsible soil management.

“Soil carbon is one of the most underappreciated tools we have to combat climate change,” Jewell explained.

However, she acknowledges the challenges, particularly the complexity of regulations and the need to shift mindsets among both farmers and buyers.

Revealing book

Jewell’s book, Carbon is Not a Dirty Word, serves as a practical guide for businesses and individuals looking to implement sustainable practices.

“The book is about making sustainability accessible, whether you’re a business leader or a farmer,” she said.
