The European Parliament President has finally spoken out amid a new corruption scandal that’s implicated some senior EU lawmakers.

Belgian Authorities say four people have been arrested on charges on money laundering, following the discovery of over €600,000 in cash.

The Parliament President Roberta Metsola breaking her silence hours ago, warning that Europe is not for sale, and announcing an internal enquiry.

One of her deputies, Vice-President Eva Kaili, is one of the four people under arrest, accused of corruption and money laundering.

The EU government is of course composed of three distinct bodies – the commission, the council, and the parliament – so far this has only implicated members of the parliament.

But that hasn’t stopped key European figures, like commission President Ursula von der Leyen from weighing in.

She called for Brussels to set up a team, dedicated to upholding rules on integrity and ethics across all EU institutions.

This scandal of course has international implications. Belgian authorities have not confirmed so – but it’s been widely reported that Qatar was behind the payments.

Wednesday will be a key day for details. With Eva Kaili and three others expected in a pre-trial chamber.
