NATO tensions rise

France has been accused by Trump of blocking U.S. military supply aircraft from flying over its airspace, something the French presidency called a surprise.

This action marked the first refusal by France since the war began on February 28.

Israel sought to use French airspace to transport U.S. weapons intended for the conflict, but the French ban was imposed despite prior agreements, according to Israeli officials.

In response, Israel’s defence ministry has stated that it will reduce defence procurement from France and halt cooperation with the French military.

Italy also denied permission for U.S. military aircraft to land at Sigonella air base in Sicily last week.

Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto remarked that U.S. airbases remain active but that special permissions are needed for activities beyond existing agreements.

Spain has vocally opposed the war, closing its airspace to U.S. planes involved in attacks on Iran.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defence Minister Margarita Robles have urged that Spanish bases will only be used for NATO’s collective defence.

Trump criticized the U.K. for not participating in military actions, suggesting they purchase fuel from the U.S. and display greater resolve.

Germany, hosting the largest U.S. base in Europe, has stated there are no restrictions on U.S. military operations from its territory, despite recent legal debates on the war’s legitimacy.
