16 politicians have been arrested outside the U.S Capitol building for protesting the overturning of Roe v Wade

Prominent U.S Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been arrested for participating in a pro-choice demonstration in Washington.

Ocasio-Cortez was one of 34 protesters who were also detained, including 15 other politicians. Other notable politicians included U.S representatives, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar.

The group gathered outside the Capitol building chanting “our bodies, our choice” and “we won’t go back.”

They stood along a crosswalk in front of the Supreme Court, before sitting down to block the street. Police then broadcasted a pre-recorded message announcing an imminent arrest.

It has now been almost a month since the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade ruling, which protected the right to an abortion under the U.S constitution. Since then, thousands of demonstrations have sparked worldwide in protest against the decision.
